If there’s one hill the STYLEVANA team will gladly die on, it’s this: daily sunscreen is entirely non-negotiable. Rain or shine, summer or dead of winter, SPF is the ultimate closer of your morning skincare routine—the ultimate defence against UV damage, hyperpigmentation, and premature fine lines.

Beyond the SPF basics, there are ways to make your sunscreen integrate seamlessly into your routine and make it work for you. Thankfully, we’ve graduated from the chalky, thick, and aggressively greasy formulas of the past, and today’s innovation, led largely by incredibly elegant Japanese and Korean formulations, means sunscreen is no longer a chore. The best modern SPFs are lightweight, completely invisible, and packed with skin-loving ingredients tailored to your specific skin type. It’s no longer just protection; it’s the MVP of your entire routine.

To help you maximise your defence, we’ve summarised the key sun protection tips as 6 golden rules of sunscreen. From application tips to getting the most out of your solar protection, here is the ultimate insider guide to making your SPF work harder for you.

Do: Use a sunscreen for your skin type

In the world of Asian sunscreens, one size fits all is a moot point. Your skin type will define the best type of sunscreen for you (physical vs chemical), as well as the texture you should be reaching for (can you tell the difference between a sun essence and sun cream?) By working with your skin type rather than against it, you ensure the smoothest application and ease of wear.

Our current favourites: the featherlight HOUSE OF HUR Weightless Sun Fluid SPF50+ PA++++ that’s designed for humid climates and oilier skin types in mind; the nourishing haruharu wonder Black Rice Pure Mineral Relief Daily Sunscreen SPF50+ PA++++ that supplies dry, sensitive skin with calming moisture; and the ANUA Zero-Cast Moisturizing Finish Sunscreen SPF50+ PA++++ for its weightless texture and invisible finish.

Don’t: Use too little sunscreen

Far too often do we see people use too little sunscreen; using less than an adequate amount won’t give you the level of SPF protection that you see on the bottle. But what’s considered an adequate amount? Experts say you should be applying at least ¼ teaspoon of sunscreen on your face, roughly equating to 2 finger lengths-full. When in doubt, start from here and layer as needed.

Do: Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours

As the day goes on your sunscreen will inevitably wear down, which is why reapplication is just as important as your initial application. Topping up your sunscreen every 2 hours will keep your exposed skin protected, saving you from unwittingly damaging it. We recommend a sun stick, cushion, mist or powder to seamlessly reapply sun protection with minimal mess and maximum effortlessness.

Don’t: Miss application on blind spots

While most of us are diligent about slathering sunscreen on our cheeks, forehead and nose, our daily application often leaves behind a hidden map of vulnerability. The tops of our ears, the delicate skin along the hairline and the crease of the jawline are frequently left completely bare. Even worse, we actively avoid the most sensitive areas, like our eyelids and lips, out of fear of stinging or bad taste, leaving the thinnest, most fragile skin on our face entirely defenceless against UV damage.

If sunscreen tends to sting around the eyes, try a gentle physical formula like the Dr.G Green Mild Up Sun+ (SPF50+ PA++++) that mitigates irritation even on the most sensitive of skin. Make sure to have a lip SPF like the Fwee Melting Smoothie Tinted Lip Balm SPF20 PA+++ in your bag at all times; you never know when the sun will strike—or when your pout will crave a hit of moisture.

Do: Match your sunscreen to your skin concerns

The beauty of today’s sunscreens is that they’re not just limited to providing UV protection; they’re also instrumental in helping you achieve your overall skin goals. The ‘skinification’ of sunscreen has produced a wide array of skincare ingredient-packed formulas, letting you take full advantage of the nourishment it gives.

Don’t: Skip sunscreen in favour of makeup

Here to decode the truth once and for all: makeup with SPF can’t replace your dedicated sunscreen application. The amount of BB cream or foundation you’d have to apply in order to get substantial SPF coverage would result in a thick, cakey mess—a veritable lose-lose situation. Leave protection to the pros and always finish your AM skincare routine with sunscreen. Give it 3-5 minutes to fully sink in, and now you can go to town on your MOTD.

That being said, we’re not against makeup products with SPF; why turn down that bit of extra sun insurance? Be it a sunscreen-primer hybrid or a mattifying powder with UV coverage, more is more when it comes to protecting your skin.

FAQ

1. Should I wear sunscreen before or after moisturiser?

Sunscreen should be applied at the very end of your morning skincare routine, after moisturiser. Give your moisturiser 2-3 minutes to fully absorb before applying your sunscreen to prevent pilling and enhance absorption. If you’re using a more hydrating or nourishing sunscreen, you can totally skip moisturiser and use the former as a 2-in-1 product to avoid overwhelming your skin.

2. Does sunscreen expire?

Like any other skincare product, sunscreen has an expiration date. Sunscreen past its expiration date gradually degrades, rendering its protection ineffective and formula unpredictable. Check for the expiration date on your bottle and keep track of when it’s time to pick up a replacement.

3. Do deeper skin tones need sunscreen?

It’s a common misconception that deeper skin tones don’t need sunscreen. While melanin does provide a low level of protection against UV rays, UV rays will still penetrate and damage the deeper layers of the dermis. No matter your skin tone, make sure to always be applying your sun protection.
